I’ve shopped for music at some of the coolest record stores in the country: Amoeba in Berkeley, Other Music in NYC (including no less than a half-dozen other jaw-dropping shops in New York), Sonic Boom in Seattle, Music Millenium in Portland, and Reckless in Chicago. Only Amoeba’s selection compares to the sheer collection size found on Louisville’s Bardstown Road. Honestly, it’s like the fucking Library of Congress for music.
While you expect superb record stores (and all the other bohemian commerce associated with them) down the street from Fillmore West, or in the East Village, ear X-tacy sits in the middle of a small, unassuming heartland city. Walking into the shop will immediately change you perception of the surprisingly indie Louisville. ear X-tacy and its Bardstown Road/Frankfort Avenue neighbors are responsible for cultivating an artistic culture that’s brought us great bands like My Morning Jacket.
There’s something so organic about Louisville’s love for music, and at its heart is ear X-tacy. It’s more than a business. Like the other great American record shops, it’s a unique interpretation of the musical experience. And hopefully you walk out with a kick-ass t-shirt too.
This is terrible news. It will break my heart if they close.
